Pastelist & Photographer Verna McClain
Verna McClain was born in Washington DC, but spent a number of years
abroad as a child and as a college student. She has always enjoyed the
new experiences encountered through travel and these remain a source
of inspiration for her work. Another major influence on Ms. McClain’s art
is her love of the natural world. The ever changing light, the subtle daily
changes through the seasons, and the awe inspiring displays of mother
nature provide rich and challenging artistic opportunities. A long standing
love of the salt marshes and wetlands makes Florida's Nature Coast
particularly appealing.

While Verna’s academic background is not in the fine arts, she has
studied painting and drawing over the years, and continues to participate
regularly in classes and workshops. She hails from a family of
professional photographers, and has been snapping photos all of her life.

Verna exhibits regularly in regional juried and open shows and has won a
number of awards. As a painter she currently works primarily in pastels.
With digital technologies, her photography has taken a turn toward
artistic painterly works. Ms. McClain is an Associate Artist member of the
Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts in Millville, NJ. She is also a
member of the
Pastel Painters Society of New Jersey and the Society of
New Jersey Artists
"My desire as an artist is to evoke an emotional response in those viewing my work.
In my landscapes and townscapes I attempt to project a mood.  It is my hope to
convey through the painting process, some of my feelings and experiences. My goal
is that  the viewer  experience a sense of being there.

Iinspiration comes from the light, colors and textures observed in my subject
matter.  Other influences include the feel of the sun, wind, cold and rain as well as
the sounds of nature.  With the courtyards, narrow passages and marketplaces, to
which I am so drawn, it it’s the textures, colors, temperature and aromas that
excite me."
